Talking Mosaic Meeting Place in Mullewa
The Shire of Mullewa has commended the whole-community effort that saw the completion of the much anticipated Talking Mosaic joint project between the Shire and Mullewa Arts Development Group at Pirrottina Park on Jose Street last month.
The purpose of the project was to encourage Mullewa community members to come together to sit and talk, and have a sense of ownership and pride in the townscape.
Community Artist Lesley King was engaged to run workshops in mosaicing with the Arts and Craft Group, Indigenous Women’s Group, Mullewa District High School, Our Lady Mount Carmel and Tardun Christian Brothers Agricultural College.
Participants were given small sections of the mosaic to fashion into shapes of wreath flowers, which were tiled into a circular area that also took in representations of the types of transport that come into Mullewa.
Mullewa Community Development Employment Program (CDEP) workers also helped to tile and grout the area.
CEO Tom Hartman said everyone was willing to pitch in to help develop the project.
“There has been a real sense of pride about the Talking Mosaic project, and it is a great asset for the community,” he said.
