Vibrant Wildflowers Colour Streetscape

The Shire of Mullewa is currently implementing a community art project to beautify the town streetscape, engaging artist Fiona Sinclair and local women to paint wildflower designs onto power poles on Jose Street.

The project is part of an overall streetscape beautification plan to promote the town as a key destination to visitors during the wildflower season.

Consultation with the community established that another purpose of the art was to encourage local pride and ownership in the town and create an enhanced streetscape for residents.

The vibrant designs capture everlastings, quandongs, spider orchids and hakea flower, as well as other fundamental elements of the town.

“Architecture from the Monsignor Hawes Church and depictions of Indigenous culture has also been incorporated,” CEO of the Shire of Mullewa Tom Hartman said.

“The figures joining hands was an idea that came from the Mullewa Indigenous Women’s Group, and represents bringing the community together and sharing that community with others.

“We have made significant progress with this project, which has also included repainting local buildings.”

Fiona Sinclair has experience in similar artistic ventures, having acted as Coordinator of the Southern Forest Sculpture Walk in Northcliffe in the south west of the state, and painting the power poles of the town with their own local flora.
