Family Day for Drought Affected Community

The Shire of Mullewa held the Mullewa Rural Family Fun Day to bring farmers affected by the drought, and their families, together for a social cause on Friday 28 March.

The Family Fun Day is in its second year of action, after the community received initial funds in 2007 from the Dry Season Assistance Scheme.

“At the time, we felt it was important to give the community a positive event in light of the difficult seasons experienced over the past few years, and the decision to continue the event this year was due to the overwhelming response last year, with over 200 people in attendance,” CEO of the Shire of Mullewa Tom Hartman said.

The community celebrated the day with cricket matches, tennis, badminton, and bowls games and followed with a barbecue and refreshments at the Recreation Centre.

The event was also an opportunity for the Shire to welcome new service providers such as teachers, police and health professionals to the town, present Australia Day awards and thank volunteers, whose tireless efforts contribute to a stronger community.

Rotary Club representative Jon Glauert was in attendance to receive on behalf of the clubs of Mosman Park, Belmont, Katanning and Mandurah, thanks for their contribution about town, including Joy Packages and Vouchers to be redeemed with local businesses in Mullewa.

“It’s important to keep the community going in light of recent hard years,” Mr Hartman said.

“We believe that supporting social activities in Mullewa is contributing to the fact that we really do have an everlasting culture.”
